Look after yourself in the lead up to the festive season. It’s important to eat well and rest too!….

I woke up in the middle of the night last night. Wide awake with my mind whizzing over everything there is to do before Christmas.

It isn’t easy to get it all done. The way I manage it and working full time is to make a comprehensive list almost a timetable. Right down to change the beds and what time I need to be at the staff Christmas do! I’m not a last minute sort of person but I have learned over the years to let a few things go. Since covid we don’t have a house full of people on Christmas Day and it is a lot easier especially now the boys are grown men and, quite frankly, our house just isn’t big enough for for lots of adults to congregate. That was quite a difficult decision for me because I’ve always loved a house full of hustle and bustle but the ease and calm is welcome after the mad Christmas rush with deliveries and the farm shop. Change is often daunting but I have found that a quiet paced Christmas Day is a treat to share with Lee and the boys now they don’t live full time at home.

Who would have thought it, certainly not me….

So I’m in the planning and doing stage. Happily ticking things off my list and looking to see what I can get done in advance and which things I real don’t need to do and can cull.

The weather has changed and it’s cold and frosty but as the frost lifts it’s just mud. So lots of mess and wet clothes. This is really the time when meal planning is your friend. Often it’s just not possible to eat together in the evenings so stews and quick cooks are best.

We have put a treat of some steaks in the meat bags this week, I’m hoping you all get chance to have a quiet steak night over the weekend, if not use the steaks in a stir fry. Made into steak sandwiches, wrapped in tin foil and taking for a evening walk/picnic by the river or on the beach is equally as good but time is short at this time of year. It’s always a treat to see the sun go down though.

Menu ideas for the week.

Steak night, with root veg wedges

Sausage casserole or quick toad in the hole
Lentil and onion curry
Golden beetroot tarte tatin or beetroot wellington if you’ve time.
Baked potatoes, coleslaw and egg salad or egg curry
Veggie soup
Apple and cinnamon muffins
