There really is “no place like home” and now is the perfect time to love and enjoy it, get a little cosy ready for the winter and indulge in the dark nights wrapped up indoors.

I don’t know if it’s just the fantasy of farmers and growers but the thought of getting in after, all be it a shorter day, work and getting dry and changing out of wet, dirty clothes seems like a treat. I’m getting the blankets and throws out after their summer off and layering up the sofa and chairs. Adding these woolly blankets and more cushions makes the place look more cosy. It’s also the time when we need all the lamps on to be able to see to read. So curling up under a blanket and stealing some time to read a book in the evening is one of my favourite winter little treats.

With winter and festive treats in mind, we have seen a lot more of you folks opting for a boned, rolled and stuffed turkey ”joint” and I can see the appeal.

You can have the size you want. If leftovers, carcass boiling and picking then isn’t your thing, then this option is the perfect. It’s possible to have a much smaller joint, it’s easy to carve, no waste and a shorter cooking time than a big bird.

We’ll be having our traditional big bird and a big ham joint too but I’m going to put a small boned, rolled and stuffed turkey joint in the freezer to use later in the year.

We traditionally have meatballs on Christmas Eve, as everyone here is tired out and a bowl of homemade tagliatelle with polpette (Italian meatballs) is quick and easy. Knock up a quick tomato sauce, some pasta and polpette from our little shop and everyone can sit by the fire with a big bowl of tasty hot food and possibly a Christmas movie.

We’d love to hear about your Christmas traditions and if you’ve already been to the farm to buy your tree please send us some pictures of it dressed. If you haven’t then potted and cut trees are still available and the shop is open Friday Saturday and Sunday 10 till 4.

There’ll be hot food, mulled wine and homemade mince pies too.

It will be lovely to see you. You might fancy a walk in the hills or along the coast to work off your Christmas Farm pulled pork sandwiches after your visit and make a day of it.

Here’s some menu ideas for this week.

Oven baked rosti.

Great to make ahead when the oven is on and it freezes really well too. Serve it with pulled pork shoulder, apple sauce and crispy kale

Frittata, a great recipe to “tidy up” any veg that is a little bit sad. Finely grate things like carrot and onion and fry them off a little bit first so the frittata isn’t wet. This is good for a quick supper or packed lunch. Taking lunch to work is a great way to cut down on waste but also to save money on expensive bought sandwiches.

Stroganoff, with the sandwich steaks but these quick cook steaks are also perfect for steak sandwiches with lots of fried onions and mushrooms if your’e watching the match at home. Add a tray of chunky spicy potato wedges. Again these can be made when the oven is on and reheated to serve.

Leek gratin with crusty bread to mop up the cheese sauce

Carrot and ginger soup with garlic croutons and crispy kale

Banana and chocolate muffins.

Enjoy your weekend and we hope to see you at the shop. Please make yourself know because we don’t always know face with names and we’d like to.

Beth
